Top Five Meat Filled Sandwiches
The ultimate ‘convenience food’, sandwiches were supposedly invented in the eighteenth century when the fourth Earl of Sandwich – too involved in a game of cards to leave his gaming table – ordered servants to bring him a meal of cooked meat between slices of bread. Whether the story is true or not, sandwiches have been hugely popular ever since, and no wonder; made with fresh bread and a perfectly-judged filling, there’s nothing quite like a sarnie! Just for fun, we’ve taken our cue from the Earl and compiled our own ‘Top Five’ meat-filled sandwiches:

5. ULTIMATE TURKEY SANDWICH
Not just any old snack, these sandwiches might take a few minutes’ work to put together but they’re definitely worth the (minimal) effort! A twist on the BLT, with added turkey and avocado, we think this is one of the nicest ways to repurpose the remains of your roast. To see the full ingredients, click here.

4. Chicken Salad Sandwich
A great meal in its own right, the delicious chicken salad sandwich is also a nice way to use up leftovers from your Sunday roast. Opinions on exact fillings vary, but the general consensus is that the meat must be smothered in mayonnaise, and crisp lettuce and cucumber or celery are crucial. Wholemeal or seeded bread is good here – try our Hobbs House Five-Seed Spelt Loaf – and, for the very best cooked-chicken filling, try roasting one of our Whole Free-Range Chickens and reserving some just for sandwiches (or cheat, and pan-fry a couple of our Free-Range Chicken Breast Fillets!)

3. Roast Beef and Horseradish
Simple, straightforward and sublime. Thinly sliced roast beef; thickly buttered soft white bread; a smidge of horseradish sauce; job done. Our Rolled Sirloin of Beef, Creamed Horseradish and Hobbs House Pain de Campagne all add up to the perfect sandwich.

2. BLT Breakfast of champions
The Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato Sandwich is a much-loved classic. The bread can be anything you choose, but the bacon must be cooked just-so, the lettuce must be crisp and the tomatoes thinly sliced and juicy. Opinion remains divided as to whether the bread should be buttered – and don’t get us started on the ‘ketchup or not’ argument…

1. Steak Baguette
The top spot has to go to the ultimate luxury sandwich. A Steak Baguette is not a way to use up leftovers, and it’s not exactly convenience food, either, but that doesn’t matter; it is indisputably the king of meat sandwiches. The key ingredients are cooked-to-perfection prime fillet steak and a fresh baguette, topped with your chosen accompaniments. Traditional favourites include slow-cooked onions, sliced tomatoes, a couple of slices of blue cheese or some cooked mushrooms, but there are some wilder ideas, too (banana, anyone?). Have fun building your perfect sandwich!
