Imperfectly Perfect Fruit & Veg

Imperfectly Perfect Fruit & Veg

Did you know that an estimated 20 to 40% of UK fruit and vegetables are rejected before they even reach the shops! At Greendale Farm Shop we don't believe there is anything wrong with wonky fruit and vegetables and stock all shapes and sizes. So take some imperfectly perfect fruit and veggies home (in one of our reusable organic net bags) and simply peel or chop the parts you don't want to eat but use the rest and keep food waste to a minimum.

Manage your food waste at home with our Top Tips....

  • Don't store fruit and vegetables together. Fruits that give off high levels of ethylene (the ripening agent) can prematurely ripen and spoil surrounding veggies.
  • Store your vegetables loosely in the refrigerator- the closer they are the quicker they will rot
  • Leafy greens can be washed before storing while soft herbs and mushrooms should not be washed until right before they are used.
  • Non-cherry stone fruits, avocados, tomatoes, mangoes, melons and apples will ripen if left sitting on the countertop while items like peppers, grapes and all citrus will only deteriorate and should be refrigerated. Bananas in particular ripen very quickly and will also speed the ripening of any nearby fruits.
