At Greendale, fishing is more than a tradition; it’s a passion that has been honed over decades.

We began in the 1960s with a small five-metre beach boat. Since then, we have expanded its fleet and fishing expertise, growing into a robust operation.

Today, the Greendale fishing fleet comprises over 20 vessels, each carrying a rich history and a carefully chosen name.

A Tradition Anchored in Ladram Bay

Nestled in East Devon, Ladram Bay offers direct access to the fertile waters of Lyme Bay, a hotspot for diverse marine life. For over 50 years, we have been intricately tied to this coastline, working tirelessly to perfect their fishing methods. With over 35 boats bought, worked, and sold over the years, their experience shines through in every aspect of their fishing operations.

The Greendale fishing fleet is more than a collection of boats; it’s a symbol of our dedication to sustainable fishing and their local community. And just as each boat serves a unique purpose, every one of them has a name that tells its own story.

Many of our vessels are named after family members, colleagues, and close friends who have played an important role in our lives.

The People Behind the Fleet

Our fishing boat names may pay tribute to individuals and our connection to Ladram Bay, but the true soul of each vessel lies with its crew.

Fishing is a demanding vocation that requires not only physical strength but also resilience, expertise, and passion. At Greendale, we hand-pick fishermen who share our commitment to quality and sustainability. These are individuals who thrive in the unpredictable and often harsh conditions at sea, ensuring that only the finest fish make it to our shop.

The Importance of Fishing Boat Names

In maritime culture, a boat’s name is more than just an identifier—it’s a reflection of its owner’s heritage, aspirations, and values. They connect us to the past while guiding us toward the future, just as our vessels navigate the waters of Lyme Bay.

The Angel of Ladram and the Becci of Ladram are just two examples of how our fleet works tirelessly to bring the freshest, most sustainable fish to Greendale Farm Shop. Whether it’s Dover Sole from the beam trawlers or fresh lobster from the potters, each catch represents the culmination of skill, passion, and respect for the sea.

So, the next time you shop with us, remember the hardworking crews and carefully maintained vessels behind every delicious bite. From the fishing boat names to the fresh fish on your plate, every detail tells a story of dedication and quality.
