The Benefits of Shopping Locally

The Benefits of Shopping Locally

At Greendale, we believe there are more reasons than ever to shop locally; as well as offering a more personal shopping experience (with direct economic benefits for the local economy), smaller local shops like ours offer fresher, better-quality stock than the supermarket giants, with a more interesting choice of locally-grown produce. As we’ve seen recently, local shops have also proved useful in a crisis; for example, when temporary fuel shortages prevented shoppers from driving to supermarkets, smaller local shops stepped in to fill the gap.

We try to buy a large percentage of the stock for our Farm Shop from local growers and producers, which helps to keep them in business. This in turn means that (like us) these businesses can employ local people, increasing the number of local jobs available; successful businesses also generate revenue to support local council services, including schools, parks, roads and libraries, helping to keep the heart and soul of the community alive.

It’s also impossible to ignore the environmental benefits of shopping locally, as these benefits are not only felt in the immediate area, but also nationally and globally. Local shoppers tend to travel less distance overall, even if they drive, and they often choose to walk or cycle instead, helping to lower local air pollution and traffic congestion. On a broader scale, locally-sourced produce also means fewer transport miles, and in turn lower co2 emissions from UK-wide food transportation (currently, unnecessary food transportation contributes more than 35% of UK co2 output).

Greendale Farm Shop is happy to be part of a thriving local community, and we hope to be here for many years to come! Despite difficult times in recent years, we’ve tried hard to support our customers, and have been rewarded by their support for us. We like knowing that a significant percentage of money spent with us is returned to and invested in our local area (a recent government study showed that, for every £10 spent locally, £3.85 is recirculated within the local community*); as well as putting money back into their own community, our shoppers are helping to boost economic recovery across the entire UK.
