30 under 30 miles 2024

Based in the heart of the East Devon countryside, Greendale Farm Shop is an award-winning family business with generations of farming experience. We take pride in selling meat from our own farmland and fish from our own boats, and we also believe it’s incredibly important – now more than ever – to support the superb local growers and producers on our doorstep here in the West Country. To this end, each week we’ll be featuring a different small business, all located within 30 miles of our Farm Shop, and all brilliant examples of the wonderful produce available locally. From artisan bakeries, dairies and micro-breweries to jam, preserve and fudge makers, soap producers and candle workshops, this small region has so many passionate and successful businesses. By filling our shop with their exceptional produce, we can offer Greendale customers a great choice, support our local economy and keep food miles to a minimum – it’s a ‘win-win’ as far as we’re concerned!

FINE ART FORD

Ellen started her work as pet portraits using her gorgeous family dog William as her first model. This developed into greetings cards for family and friends which, after lots of interest, turned into her own new business - Fine Art Ford. The care and detail Ellen takes in her portraits really shines through in her greetings cards, featuring popular breeds and familiar faces for many people. "My favourite part of my pet portraits is painting the eyes as that is the moment when their character really comes through and they look like them." We're lucky enough to now be stocking a full Valentine's range from Fine Art Ford - including features of our own furry & feathery friends from the farm trail!

BRAND #2:
SIDBURY MILL
WEEK: 09 - 15/02/24

Sidbury Mill flour is remarkable not only for being milled in a historical water mill, but also for its local ‘field to shelf’ supply chain and manufacture. The flour is unique in that is entirely ‘East Devon’ in its provenance. Sidbury Mill flour is made exclusively from wheat grown on the Sidbury Mill farm, just across the River Sid.

Sidbury Mill flour is stoneground for wholesomeness and taste, retaining all the goodness of the whole grains. All milling steps are done by hand and there is no automation, and the mill itself is entirely powered by the water wheel. The first record of the mill at Sidbury was in 1281, when there were two mills on site, one for grinding corn and the other for fulling wool. In December 2020, Philip Parsons and Helen Munday, bought the mill.

BRAND #8:
TICKLEMORE CHEESE DAIRY
WEEK: 22 - 28/03/24

Ticklemore Cheese Dairy, based in Totnes, Devon, are the producers of three artisan blue cheeses; award winning Devon Blue made with cow’s milk, Beenleigh Blue made with sheep’s milk, and Harborne Blue, from goat’s milk. Unsurprisingly, Devon Blue is one of our champion cheeses here at Greendale, with it being featured in several of our recipes owing to its buttery rich flavour, yet moist and crumbly texture.
Robin Congdon first established Ticklemore as one of the first pioneers in the 1970s to revive the tradition of milking sheep in the UK. He started off with thirty sheep on a smallholding near Exeter and initially produced yoghurt and soft cheeses which he took to London once a week to sell. In October 2023, Ben Harris and his wife Laura became Directors of Ticklemore Cheese Ltd, after Robin took a back seat. Ben started in the cheese dairy in 2002 and has worked in all areas of the cheese dairy since, from pasteurising the milk to progressing to main cheesemaker in charge of the dairy.
In a bid to make the most of the dairy’s byproducts, the liquid whey produced from cheesemaking goes to a local Pig farm, where breeds such as Gloucestershire Old Spots enjoy their daily portion of whey from Ticklemore.

BRAND #9:
baboo gelato
WEEK: 29/03/24 - 04/04/24

Westcountry wonders Baboo Gelato make ice cream that’s out of this world! A customer favourite for good reason, their artisanal ice cream is carefully prepared on-site in Rampisham, Dorset, using succulent fruit and local organic milk.

Baboo Gelato was set up in 2015 by Annie Hanbury, a trained gelatiere, who wanted to combine her passion for making seriously good ice cream with the glut of fabulous ripe fruit on her doorstep. After years of living abroad, Annie and her family moved to the beautiful rolling hills behind the Dorset seaside town of Bridport and became the proud owners of a smallholding with an overflowing and abandoned market garden. Annie decided she wanted to put the heart and soul back into ice cream making. She missed her children’s excitement and wonder as they chose from a gorgeous array of colourful and scrumptious flavours. Baboo Gelato wants to recapture this magic.

BRAND #11:
BOO CHI KOMBUCHA
WEEK: 12 - 18/04/24

Boo Chi use traditional far eastern methods to create real, live, whole kombucha - a tangy, effervescent tea-based drink that's been consumed for centuries. Its popularity has surged recently due to its potential health benefits, primarily its rich probiotic content. It's a natural, tasty, and enjoyable way to support your gut microbiome and makes a great addition to any health-conscious diet.
After taking a break from her acting career, founder Eaoifa set out with a dedicated and passionate team to create her own kombucha named Boo Chi, (Boo being the drink and Chi for the energy it gives you) after trying it during her time working in Sri Lanka.
Here at Greendale, we love Boo Chi because all of their ingredients are purchased from local organic suppliers, their products are never pasteurised (killing the good bacteria) and they never sterile filtrate (remove the good bacteria).

BRAND #13:
FRESH FLOUR COMPANY
WEEK: 26.04/24 - 02/05/24

Andrew Gilhespy was inspired to create the Fresh Flour Company and their delicious range of pastas, noodles, crackers and biscuits, after attending Schumacher College and being mentored by some of the UK’s most visionary artisan millers and bakers.
The Fresh Flour Company philosophy is very simple: "We only use English heritage and ancient wheats. We work in partnership with organic farmers. We pay them fairly and realistically. We mill the grains they grow into flour on our premises. We make all of our own products. We only use other ethically sourced, natural ingredients."
Their flour is milled and made in Devon, from 100% naturally grown non-synthetic grain. It’s also stone ground and as Fresh as it gets; bagged and sent for delivery within 12 hours or used that day for making pasta, crackers and Biscuits. No fillers, no emulsifiers. Good food.
