Farming

The Carter family has been farming the East Devon countryside for more than five generations. Knowledge and experience have been handed down from father to son, continuing to inform our decisions every day as we farm into the 21st century. We take care to maintain a proper balance of animal welfare and successful productivity; to this end, while we invest in efficient, up-to-the-minute technology, we also ensure that we meet the standards required by the RSPCA Freedom Food and the Red Tractor Food Assurance animal welfare schemes. We believe animals must be treated with respect, and provide our pigs, beef cattle, sheep and chickens with a low-stress lifestyle and a natural diet.

The decision to set up Greendale Farm Shop came about when, as a farm, we found ourselves increasingly at the mercy of a few very powerful supermarkets who, over a sustained period of time, were slowly driving down the wholesale prices of everything we produced, to unsustainable levels. To escape these circumstances we decided to cut out the middle-men and concentrate on selling produce direct to customers via a farm shop (and now website), enabling us to sell high-quality products at prices fair to both supplier and customer. We want to make sure that shopping with us is nothing like a visit to the supermarket, for all the right reasons; fresh, locally sourced produce, an emphasis on traceability and friendly service that goes the extra mile to make your experience a happy one.

Why Greendale Beef is best

Pastured at our family farm on East Devon’s Jurassic coast, the Greendale beef herd comprises a mix of Limousin, Charolais, Red Devon Cross, Belgian Blue and Blonde d'Aquitaine cattle. We place great importance on animal welfare, such as the guidelines set out by the Red Tractor Food Assurance Scheme. Good herd management and a grass- and maize-based diet ensure our animals lead healthy, stress-free lives, and in turn produce superb quality meat. Our beef is hung on the bone for a minimum of three weeks, giving it time to develop wonderful tenderness and flavour, then the skilled butchers at Greendale Farm Shop finish the process, preparing the delicious, high-quality beef products we’re renowned for.

Greendale Lamb

Greendale lamb comes from breeding ewes, which are predominantly traditional breeds such as Suffolk and Blackface. After enjoying the rich grazing pastures of East Devon, the lambs are carefully selected when they reach the correct weight; they are slaughtered at a local abattoir to keep stress to a minimum. Hung for a minimum of ten days, the meat becomes even more flavoursome and tender. Our master butchers then prepare it on-site at Greendale Farm Shop, skilfully turning it into plump chops, classic roasts, burgers, meatballs and much, much more.
